ROOFING MATERIALS

There are 80 year old slate tiles on the existing roof.  We are maintaining the existing slate roof but have many options for the roof on the addition.

This chart shows an estimate of where out home energy dollars go, so perhaps a solar hot water system is the best idea, especially since we have radiator heat.

1.  Dow Solar Shingles, which serve as roofing material as well as a power resource. Great looking, but these are for electricity, not hot water.

2. Englert Solar Thermal, a  standing seam metal roof  that collects the sun’s energy to provide heat for hot water systems and radiant floor heating systems [hope to get one of these].

The plans call for roof tiles on the mass of roof for the addition, and metal roofing on the porch and the attic windows.  So, perhaps a mix of both solar and photovoltaic could be an option......need to review the cost of each and tax credits too.
